A Gynaecologist’s Guide to Valentines Day; how to know what contraception is right for you!

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner it’s important to remember boundaries, consent and of course, contraception. While contraception can play an important role in pregnancy prevention, it also helps you feel comfortable, confident and safe in your body. Contraception is essential for maintaining safe sexual practices and there are many different methods from pill form medication to implants that can help prevent any potentially unwanted… outcomes.

There is no single “best” contraception option, only what is best for you.

Understanding Contraception  (It’s more than just pregnancy prevention!)

While commonly associated with preventing pregnancy, contraception also plays a very key role in managing symptoms that can otherwise be disruptive, painful or emotionally exhausting. Hormonal contraception is often used to reduce heavy or painful periods that interfere with your overall quality of life. Certain contraceptive methods help regulate things like bleeding patterns, providing predictability and reassurance. While others are used to manage gynaecological conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or endometriosis, where hormonal regulation may help ease symptoms like pelvic pain, bloating, acne or mood changes.

Methods such as the oral contraceptive pill is a daily medication option that can help to regulate, and manage period symptoms. Although, common alternatives are the IUD (intrauterine device), offering a low maintenance, long acting solution that can significantly reduce heavy or painful period symptoms. Contraception can also influence skin health and hormonal symptoms. Some methods aim to  improve acne or reduce cycle-related fluctuations. Beyond physical symptoms, a reliable contraception method offers peace of mind and support within yourself and intimate relationships without the ongoing stress of unintended pregnancy.

Valentine’s Day, Spontaneity & Emergency Contraception

Valentine’s Day can come with spontaneity, and sometimes, things don’t go exactly to plan… If you’ve had unprotected sex or a contraceptive mishap, emergency contraception is a safe and effective backup option.

Need a Last-Minute Option? Understanding the Emergency Contraceptive Pill

The Emergency Contraceptive Pill (ECP), often called the “morning after pill,” works by delaying or preventing ovulation and is most effective when taken as soon as possible.

In Australia, there are two main types available from pharmacies without a prescription:

  • One option is effective up to 72 hours (3 days) after unprotected sex

  • Another option can be used up to 5 days, though availability is much more limited

It’s important to note that the ECP is not an abortion pill, does not provide ongoing contraception, and does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs)

Be Aware of Potential Side Effects

You may experience some mild, short-term side effects that include headache, nausea, abdominal pain, dizziness and changes to your bleeding pattern. If you do vomit after taking the ECP within 2-3 hours, you should get another tablet.

The Emergency Contraceptive Pill (ECP) is safe, effective, and there to give you peace of mind if things don’t go exactly as planned. Taking it as soon as possible can help reduce the risk of pregnancy, and experiencing this doesn’t mean you’ve done anything wrong,  it’s simply a way to take care of yourself and your health.

Choosing What’s Right for You

Your ideal contraception depends on many factors, including your lifestyle, health history, menstrual symptoms, future pregnancy plans and personal preferences. A conversation with a gynaecologist can help you explore your options and feel confident in your choice.
