Endometrial Ablation

What is an Endometrial Ablation?

Having an endometrial ablation, a non-invasive surgical procedure performed to remove the tissue inside the uterus may sound like a dramatic treatment for heavy periods but it really can be life-changing.

At Northside Gynaecology, this safe and effective day procedure is performed to manage benign, non-cancerous, conditions without the need for stitches, and vaginally under general anaesthetic.

During a woman’s monthly cycle the lining of the uterus is shed naturally, however, some women experience excessive bleeding and/or a menstrual cycle that is too long. When medication including the oral contraceptive pill is unsuccessful, it may be determined that this is the best treatment before considering the more serious option of a hysterectomy, where the uterus is removed.

Important Facts to Consider

Endometrial ablation is a permanent procedure. It works effectively to assist women to reduce, and in many cases eliminate their monthly period. In severe cases it assists those who experience anaemia as a result of excessive blood loss.

Northside Gynaecology offer women a range of options, one being NovaSure endometrial ablation or Thermablate EAS. It is a 5-minute procedure that can be undertaken mid cycle removing the lining without an incision.

Menstrual Cycle Post Procedure

It is important to be aware that approximately 30-40% of women will cease to have a monthly period after an endometrial ablation is performed. Those that continue to will experience a far lighter bleed and no further treatment will be necessary.

Over time, however, a woman’s menstrual cycle may return unless menopause has commenced.

Pregnancy Post Procedure

Due to the nature of the procedure, the ability to fall pregnant reduces significantly and the majority of women are unable to become pregnant after an endometrial ablation. It is recommended not to get pregnant after the procedure due to high risk with pregnancy.

This procedure in itself, however, should not be considered a safeguard or a permanent method of contraception.

It’s likely that the length and heavy flow of your menstrual cycle is starting to take its toll.

Premenopausal women who experience heavy periods or bleeding between periods and no longer have a desire to have children are turning to this safe procedure. Whilst alternative treatments are always available and may be recommended in your situation, an endometrial ablation might just be the best option for you.
